At night anyone not on duty was billeted with families in the village or, as they did in the small village of Osmanville, the Germans removed the local people and took over every house for military use. Numerous villagers remember the Germans ‘sharing’ their homes—in some cases this was workable, but in others it was far from ideal. They also set up a roadblock at both ends of the Route des Perruques road, and this was manned 24 hours a day with an armed sentry. Another sentry post was built halfway down the lane and was large enough for one man to stand inside to shelter during bad weather.
